Start with port count and uplink speed

Count every device that needs a copper port today, then add 20 to 30 percent growth. Desktops, access points, IP cameras, and intercoms all consume ports. For a 30 desk office with eight ceiling APs and four cameras, a 48 port gigabit switch is safer than a 24 port unit that fills up in year two.

Check uplinks separately. If your core router or firewall uses SFP or SFP+, the access switch should have at least one combo or dedicated SFP port for a clean 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps path. Many Kenyan sites still run 1 Gbps uplinks, but 10 Gbps SFP+ is common on new POP builds in Westlands, Karen, and industrial parks.

PoE budget matters for Wi-Fi and cameras

Power over Ethernet removes wall adapters for access points and many cameras. Each switch publishes a total PoE budget in watts. Add the draw of every powered device. A typical Wi-Fi 6 AP may need 15 to 20 W. Eight APs can exceed 150 W before you count phones or door controllers.

802.3af (15.4 W per port) is enough for many APs. 802.3at (30 W) or 802.3bt (60 W) is required for high power APs, pan tilt cameras, or some VoIP handsets. Match the switch class to the devices you already stock.

VLANs separate guest Wi-Fi, CCTV, and staff data. Even a single site benefits from a guest VLAN that cannot reach printers or servers. Quality of Service helps voice and video when the link is busy.

Look for a web GUI or mobile app you can hand to the client, plus SNMP if you monitor from a NOC. Loop protection and storm control save late night callouts when someone patches the wrong cable.
